10 Years of Pushing For Linux — and Giving Up http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotLinux/~3/84968148/article.pl boyko.at.netqos writes "Jim Sampson at Network Performance Daily writes about his attempts over a decade to get Linux working in a business/enterprise environment, but each time, he says, something critical just didn't work, and eventually, he just gave up. The article caps with his attempts to use Ubuntu Edgy Eft — only to find a bug that still prevented him from doing work." Quoting: "For the next ten years, I would go off and on back to this thought: I wanted to support the Open Source community, and to use Linux, but every time, the reality was that Linux just was not ready... Over the last six years, I've tried periodically to get Linux working in the enterprise, thinking, logically, that things must have improved. But every time, something — sometimes something very basic — prevented me from doing what I needed to do in Linux."

Microsoft Applies To Patent DRM'ed OS Modules http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotLinux/~3/84906507/article.pl wellingj writes "Microsoft has applied for a patent that sounds on the face of it like it ought to improve OS stability and reliability: the patent proposes to modularize device drivers much like Linux does. But, going further, Microsoft would apply DRM to these modules — as Groklaw puts it, 'using modularity plus DRM to restrict and contain and enforce.' The net result is that you might have to pay extra for OS hardware support. Things like USB keys, DVD-ROMS, Raid drives, and video cards might not be supported out of the box. LXer indulges in some dystopian speculation."

Third NetBSD Hackathon Summary http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotBsd/~3/55864569/article.pl jschauma writes, "The third NetBSD Hackathon was held on Saturday and Sunday, November 25th and 26th, 2006. NetBSD users and developers met on IRC to prepare NetBSD for the upcoming re-branching of NetBSD 4.0. Approximately thirty NetBSD developers and more than 140 NetBSD users joined in on the two days, paying particular attention to improving install documentation and ensuring build stability. A Wiki page as a TODO list was used for the first time, an approach that is likely to be used in future hackathons. All in all, over 200 bugs have been worked on in those two days and while not all of the critical showstoppers could be fixed, valuable progress was made in identifying root causes."

Industry comment There's a secret many people in the IPTV/VoD industry don't want you to know. Setting up an IPTV network is actually incredibly easy. In fact, almost anyone can do it. The interview examines what's involved in maintaining this complex portion of the Linux kernel, and offers an accessible explanation of how IO schedulers work. Jens details his own CFQ, or Complete Fair Queue scheduler which is the default Linux IO scheduler. Finally, the article examines the current state of Linux kernel development, how it's changed over the years, and what's in store for the future."

Wed, 31 Jan 2007 14:01:03 +0200 Fedora Metrics Help Whole Linux Community http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdotLinux/~3/84085143/article.pl lisah writes "When Fedora released Fedora Core 6 late last year, the team decided to track the number of users with unique IP addresses who connected to yum in search of updates for a new installation of FC6. According to the data they collected, FC6 crossed the one-million user mark in just 74 days. Fedora Project Leader Max Spevack says that while it's great to use metrics to better understand what users want, the real value lies in its ability to encourage hardware vendors to more offer more Linux-oriented goods and services. Spevack told Linux.com: '[W]e always say we wish hardware vendors had more [Linux-capable] drivers. Well, if you can go to them and say, "Hey, there's millions of people using this," then maybe they will listen. In the real world, you need data to prove your case. Well, here it is.'"
